One day you’re an SEO intern, and the next you’re a full time employee with the title SEO executive. This is a story of my transition from a university graduate to a marketing professional.

This is how the story begins…

You would have been asked ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ Well I wanted to be a wizard. Not a doctor, fashion designer or teacher. Just an incredibly talented wizard. I waited for my acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I even made myself a makeshift wand out of a stick. Expelliarmus indeed! I quickly realised that my acceptance letter to Hogwarts was taking it’s time. I decided that in the meantime I would get myself a muggle job.

Long story short I went to university and received my Bachelor of Business Administration specialising in Marketing. Once I had earned my degree I thought that a digital marketing job would be easy to find. Unfortunately for me, it was not easy. Where’s magic when you need it? This brings me to the job search.

The Job Search

The job search brings me to the phase in my life I like to call insanity. So insane in fact, I donned a onesie every day, watched The Real Housewives of every state (I literally mean every single one), and applied for Entry level and Graduate marketing jobs. I was hoping that I would find myself a marketing job, and put an end to the insanity!

What I learnt was that ‘entry level’ and ‘graduate jobs’ meant you needed experience before experience. In other words, if you don’t have 2-3 years’ experience, you probably won’t be considered for the position. Had I been hit by a confundus charm? Because I was confused! I thought entry level and graduate jobs literally meant no experience. Well it didn’t. Perhaps an internship was a better option?

My SEO Internship

I came across AMIRE, and after my interview I was offered an SEO internship. Finally an opportunity to gain actual industry experience! My SEO internship taught me so much invaluable knowledge and expertise in the digital marketing field. Knowledge really is power, and especially in marketing. I worked closely with the two directors of AMIRE Amye and Sean. They guided me, and provided me with knowledge and opportunities to learn and grow. SEO internship for the win!

This is what I thought my SEO internship would be like:

From intern to an SEO employee

Once my internship came to a close, I was ecstatic to learn that AMIRE had offered me the full time position of SEO Executive. I have now been a full time employee at AMIRE for three months. My first three months as an SEO Executive taught me so much more than I had anticipated. I have done so many amazing things, I have gained many skills, and have been working closely with clients I could only dream of. From an intern to a full time employee I thoroughly enjoyed my transition.

The opportunity that AMIRE provided me, has helped me to continue learning and growing as a digital marketer. In case you were wondering, I am still yet to receive my acceptance letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I’m still waiting though. I now demand that everyone at AMIRE refer to me as the SEO wizard. I’m also demanding a mug with the same title. If it’s on a mug, it’s true.

By the way, stay tuned for part two of this blog post, where I discuss the 10 things I learnt during my SEO internship and Job.

So tell me about your transition from graduate to a professional? Was your experience similar?
